Update 27th March 2024: MyWhoosh Apple TV is now publicly available / out of beta. It’s available on the Apple App Store now. I haven’t tested, as I don’t have Apple TV.
Yesterday MyWhoosh announced the Beta Program for Apple TV users, alongside their new MyWhoosh Link App.
As best I understand it, MyWhoosh have had some issues until now with launching for the Apple TV due to the way Bluetooth works with Apple TV – I could be wrong on this, as I do not own an Apple TV. So the workaround will be that you connect your hardware (turbo, heart rate monitor, power meter, etc) to your phone and that will then middle-man to MyWhoosh.
Which, if you have used it before, is one way Zwift Companion App can also be used.
How to Join the Beta Program
Participating in the Beta Program is straightforward.
Simply fill out the Beta Program Registration Form.
MyWhoosh is looking for Apple TV using cyclists eager to test and provide feedback on their latest feature.
As part of the sign up process they list the following Apple TV models:
- Apple TV (1st generation)
- Apple TV (2nd generation)
- Apple TV (3rd generation)
- Apple TV HD
- Apple TV 4K (1st generation)
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)
Whether all of these Apple TV models are fully supported is not disclosed. Possibly the very early versions might not be? Also it’s possible that Beta access will be easier to get if you have one of the lesser used models.
They are also asking for your Apple tvOS Version number, which is a free text field.
You can also opt in or out of testing the Link App, but as below, the Link App Beta requires that you also be using Apple TV right now.
Exclusive Features for Beta Testers
Beta testing is available exclusively for Apple TV users.
The Link App Beta, available on iOS & Android, is designed to complement your cycling sessions but will only work with the Apple TV Beta version of MyWhoosh.
It is suggested that the Link App will be available to all MyWhoosh users, once it is out of Beta. I do not have more information on that at this time.
Introducing the MyWhoosh Link App
The MyWhoosh Link App looks to be similar to Zwift Companion App. All I have to go off at the moment is the one screenshot that MyWhoosh have released.
From the MyWhoosh Apple TV Beta announcement, we also know that it offers:
- Easy Access: Instantly join premium events, connect with friends, and view your activities and events list.
- Stay Connected: Effortlessly manage messages and friendships, ensuring you never miss out on any planned events.
- Customise Your Experience: Personalise your settings with at-a-glance features including profile management, Bluetooth connectivity, live ride data, and notifications.
Next Steps
After registering, keep an eye on your inbox for an email containing download instructions and how to get started with the Beta.
They are looking for community feedback – after all, this is a beta release. I think the previous Beta was limited to 100 users, but this one doesn’t specify a limit. Maybe that’s because far fewer riders use Apple TV as a platform, I really have no idea. It will certainly be interesting to see how an Unreal Engine product runs on Apple TV.
